Chinese Name: 苦參

TCM: Listed under “Herbs that clear Heat”, included in “Herbs that clear Heat and dry Dampness”, bitter and cold Sophora flavescens (ku shen) enters the Bladder, Heart, Liver, Large Intestine, Small Intestine and Stomach channels.  It clears Damp-Heat in the lower burner, disperses Wind, kills parasites and clears Heat and promotes urination. it is used in formulas for bleeding , dysentery, bloody stool, jaundice, swelling, difficult urination, eczema, sores and itching.

General: It has a diuretic effect, can inhibit allergic reactions and the formation of allergy related antibodies. It has effects against bacillary dysentery and amoebiasis and trichimoniasis. It also has a positive effect on arrhythmias, ulcers and asthma
